The reviews are unanimous. 'Gold standard.' 'King of the roguelike-Metroidvania.' Several outlets bypass scoring entirely and just tell you to buy it. The combat, the run-to-run progression, the sense that nothing kills you unfairly — every reviewer landed on the same set of things and the same conclusion.
Hundred-hour playthroughs are routine in the player reviews, and most people are still finding new builds years in. The only complaint that comes up is the DLC count — there are four of them now, and the base game is no longer getting big updates. Neither has actually dented the enthusiasm.
Critics and players agree. The eight-point gap is just players having lived with it longer. Six years at 89/97 isn't a controversy — it's a recommendation.
