The original PS4 reviews landed somewhere around 'competent zombie game, nothing you haven't seen before, the bike is cool.' Slow first act, repetitive side content, decent story once it gets going. When Sony finally put it on PC years later, several outlets walked back the lukewarm reception once the performance issues were gone.
People who came to Days Gone late — sale prices, the PC port, post-cancellation curiosity — keep saying the same thing. The Deacon-and-Boozer friendship is one of the better-written ones in modern games. The bike-as-survival mechanic actually works. The first time a 500-strong horde shows up on your screen is unforgettable. Most acknowledge the slow start. Almost nobody regrets pushing through it.
This is a sleeper. The launch reviews scored a slow-burning PS4 exclusive on deadline; players are scoring it years later, with patches, on PC, on sale, knowing Sony killed the sequel. Same game, completely different context. Worth playing.
