Battlefield 2042

DIVIDED16-point gap — critics scored higher
Critics

The launch reviews hedged in ways that turned out to be prescient. Outlets gave 2042 credit for scale, for Portal mode, for the willingness to try Specialists instead of classes. They also flagged technical issues and the now-familiar 'we'll need to see how this is patched.' That second part is the part that aged.

Players

Two camps. The first never got in — Secure Boot lockouts, anti-cheat refusing to start, EA launcher errors, lobbies that black-screen and dump you back to the menu. The second is people who quietly enjoy it, mostly on sale, mostly bot matches, and recommend it as a five-dollar Battlefield with bigger maps than BF6. The middle group, the people actually arguing about the design, barely exists anymore.

The Verdict

Critics scored the game DICE was promising. Players are scoring the one EA shipped, with the anti-cheat that didn't exist at review time. Worth picking up cheap if you can get past the launcher. Otherwise let it be.
