Atomic Heart

Critics

The reviews split between the world and the structure. Everybody loved the Soviet-retrofuturist setting and the combat-and-powers loop — the Bioshock comparison shows up in basically every review. The reservations cluster around the open-world stretches, the pacing, and a script that even fans called uneven.

Players

Two arguments going on at once. One is whether the dialogue is funny or insufferable, and there's almost no middle ground. The other is the open world, where pretty much everyone agrees the respawning enemies and crafting grind wear the goodwill down. The soundtrack and the visual identity get near-universal credit either way.

The Verdict

It's a flawed game with a great vibe. If the aesthetic and the music carry you through, the rough edges are tolerable. If they don't, the open-world stretches will lose you fast. Buy it for the first few hours inside the facility and the soundtrack. Tolerate the rest.
